What is PC-TRACK?
PC-TRACK is a simple but sophisticated means of tracking earth
orbiting satellites. PC-TRACK is capable of tracking up to 8 satellites
simultaneously in 3D! PC-TRACK is useful to amateur radio and weather
satellite users, science teachers, experimenters, and serious satellite
users. Use it for demonstrating orbital mechanics, predicting
availability times, making presentations, performing satellite
constellation studies, and general orbital analyses. PC-TRACK uses
satellite data readily available from NASA and other sources.
PC-TRACK offers the following features.

WHAT YOU NEED...
In order to run properly, PC-TRACK needs...
■ any 8088, 8086, 80286, 80386SX, 80386, 80486 processor based system.
(A math coprocessor significantly improves performance, but is not
necessary to run.)
■ 640K RAM. (Must have at least 500K available.)
■ at least 2MB of disk space.
■ MS-DOS or PC-DOS version 3.0 or greater.
■ EGA Color Video (Required for graphics use. Any lesser video
standard will work using the TEXT track capability).
■ an optional printer capable of printing 6 and at least 12 Characters
Per Inch (CPI);
■ The operational files included on the Distribution Disk.
WHAT TO DO...
GETTING STARTED IS AS SIMPLE AS A B C:
A] Make Backup Copys:
Make a copy of the distribution disk and then put the original away in
a safe place BEFORE actually beginning to use the program. DO NOT USE
THE DISTRIBUTION DISK FOR OPERATION!
B] Install the program, data, and graphics files:
The program, data, and graphics files are distributed as self-
extracting ZIP files. To extract the files, there are two methods
available. They are the Automatic method and the Manual method.
The Automatic Method:
Place the distribution disk in one of your floppy drives and
change drive name to that drive. Then type INSTALL <RETURN>.
For example, if you wish to use the A drive, place the
diskette in the A drive and type A:<RETURN>. Then type
INSTALL<RETURN>.
NOTE: IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU CHANGE THE DRIVE NAME TO THE
PROPER DRIVE BEFORE RUNNING INSTALL. TYPING
A:INSTALL<RETURN> WILL NOT WORK!
The PC-TRACK installation program will begin and will ask for
the directories you would like to install the various files
in. You do not have to have those subdirectories created
before running INSTALL since it will create any subdirectories
needed (after confirming it with you). It will also configure
the SYSTEM.DEF file with these subdirectories for you. After
this, PC-TRACK will be ready to run.
The Manual Method:
This method is more involved and should be necessary only in
special situations where the INSTALL program will not do the
job. The steps are as follows:
Suppose you want to have PC-TRACK in a subdirectory called
TRACK. You would create this subdirectory (from the root
directory) by typing
MD TRACK <RETURN>.
Then you would select this new subdirectory by typing
CD TRACK <RETURN>.
Now you can extract the files from the backup distribution
disk. Assuming you have this disk in drive A, you would type:
A:PROGRAM PCT21.EXE HELP.TXT USERGIDE.DOC REGISTER<RETURN>.
These files will begin being UNZIPPED to the subdirectory
TRACK.
Next you would create the subdirectory for the data files. I
recommend creating this subdirectory under the program
directory. Using the above example, from the TRACK directory,
you would type
MD DATA<RETURN>.
Again, you would select this new subdirectory:
CD DATA<RETURN>.
Now type
A:PROGRAM *.DAT
Now you need to UNZIP the graphics files. This is done in the
same manner as with PROGRAM.EXE. The maps and globe views are
contained in a file called GRAPHICS.EXE. Once again you
should create a subdirectory on your hard disk for your maps
and globe views.
If so, get back to the TRACK directory by typing
CD..<RETURN>.
Then
MD GRAPHICS<RETURN>
CD GRAPHICS<RETURN>
A:GRAPHICS<RETURN>
Finally, configure PC-TRACK to use the data and graphics:
If you installed the data and graphics in subdirectories
different from the the one you installed PC-TRACK in, then
do the following, otherwise no other action is necessary to
use the maps.
- From the correct drive (the one with PC-TRACK on it)
type PCT21.
- From the MAIN MENU just type CS.
- In the Configure System window, press <RETURN> until
the cursor is at Data Path.
- Enter the drive and path that you installed the data
files in. In our example, this would be
C:\TRACK\DATA<RETURN>
- The cursor will now be at Map Path.
- Again, enter the drive and path that you installed the
graphics files in. In our example, this would be
C:\TRACK\GRAPHICS<RETURN>
- To save the new information now, press the ESCape key
ONCE, and then press RETURN.
- You should now be back to the CONFIG menu. Press
ESCape one more time to get back to the MAIN MENU.
- Finally, press Q.
NOTE: You may, if you desire, have all the files included in
the same directory. It's up to you. If you do, instead of
doing the above, you would do this
MD TRACK<RETURN>
CD TRACK<RETURN>
A:PROGRAM<RETURN>
A:GRAPHICS<RETURN>
The program is now configured to operate. To make other changes, see
the Users Guide (USERGIDE.DOC) or the on-line help screens.
C] Print The Users Guide...
I recommend you print out the users guide provided on the
distribution disk in the PROGRAM.EXE file. It was installed in the
same subdirectory as the main program. It explains how to use PC-
TRACK. To print out the PC-TRACK Manual, just type:
COPY USERGIDE.DOC PRN <RETURN>.
NOTE: THIS IS A CONTINUOUS, UNFORMATTED ASCII FILE WITH NO CONTROL
CHARACTERS OR PAGE BREAKS. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THIS FORMAT, YOU CAN
DO YOUR OWN CHANGES BY USING EDITING IT WITH YOUR FAVORITE WORD
PROCESSOR.

the INSTALL program.)
COLORS.DEF Contains the screen colors used by the program.
SYSTEM.DEF Contains the system configuration parameters and the
printer control codes.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
There may be other files added by distributors, but your disk should
at least include the files shown above.
░░▒▒▓▓██ HOW TO GET SATELLITE DATA ██▓▓▒▒░░
PC-TRACK contains in the file OBJECTS.DAT information on several
weather and amateur satellites. You may wish to track other satellites
and in time the included data will become out of date. It will be
necessary in any case to update this information. The satellite
information required can be obtained by requesting the "NASA PREDICTION
BULLETIN" or the "TWO LINE ORBITAL ELEMENTS" for each of the objects
desired, referenced by CATALOG NUMBER from:
PROJECT OPERATIONS BRANCH (CODE 513)
NASA/GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER
GREENBELT, MD. 20771
You may also request a package of prediction bulletins for certain
categories of objects such as weather or amateur radio satellites rather
than by individual CATALOG NUMBERS.
If you do not know the CATALOG NUMBER of the satellites you wish to order
data for, you can request the current "SATELLITE SITUATION REPORT". To
the best of my knowledge there is no charge for this document and it can
also be obtained from the above address.
The Satellite Situation Report lists almost every object currently in
orbit. Each object is cataloged by the International Designation and by
Catalog number. It also lists the name, launch date, orbital period in
minutes, inclination, apogee, perigee, and transmitting frequency. By
using this document you can determine the catalog numbers of the objects
you wish to track with PC-TRACK.
